Air Accidents Investigation Branch

Chris Lewis Security help secure access to the Air Accidents Investigation Branch.

Project Background

This project was subcontracted to us by electrical contractors, Darke and Taylor. The AAIB wanted to upgrade their existing access control and alarm system at their headquarters. They also wanted to extend its capabilities to cover new offices and two aircraft hangers. Although their existing access control system was advanced at the time of installation, technological developments over the last four years have brought new products to the market that offer more advanced features and user friendly interfaces.

With our experience of access control and intruder alarm systems, combined with our innovative approach to IT solutions, Chris Lewis Fire & Security was able to provide two new systems that met all of the AAIB's requirements.

Scope of Works

Access control - Paxton Net 2
Intruder Alarm - Grade 3

Client Background

The UK Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) is part of the Department for Transport and is responsible for the investigation of civil aircraft accidents and serious incidents within the UK. Its headquarters in Farnborough, Hampshire is where aircraft wreckage is transported for investigation and examination.

The Solution

A Net2 Access Control system was installed utilising the AAIB's existing IT network. Because Net2 is such a highly sophisticated and intuitive system, it supports other manufacturers reader technology. This meant the AAIB's staff could continue to use their existing swipe cards.

Graham Cousin, Project Manager at Chris Lewis Security comments, "Net2 will work in conjunction with the AAIB?s existing front end security system. This meant a substantial cost saving for the AAIB. What's more, all the card data, such as ownership details and access rights has simply been imported across to the new system - again saving the AAIB considerable time and money."

Net2 will also support any future changes or developments that the AAIB decide to implement to the system and is therefore a very satisfactory, long term security solution.

The interface is a user-friendly Windows based system that allows multiple users to access it at any one time. Amongst other functions, selected staff can access the system to amend access rights, run numerous reports on users, track the use of lost or stolen cards, control times when doors are locked, as well as issuing new or temporary cards.

Client comment

Debbie Reeves, Accommodation Officer at the Air Accidents Investigation Branch comments, "The windows based software is relatively easy to use and we feel that we have greater control over managing the system. The engineers were always polite and helpful whilst on site and we have been very impressed with the after sales service provided by Chris Lewis Fire & Security."
