Fire regulations require any non-domestic building with more than 1 storey to provide a disabled refuge and safe evacuation route for anyone who cannot easily use fire escapes, lifts and stairs during a fire or other emergency.
Are there legal requirements on disabled refuges?
Disabled refuges must have a fireproof two-way communication system in place that meets the BS 5839 Part 8/9 standards so that fire officers, fire wardens and building managers can keep in contact with any disabled people in the refuge.
