Resources: Glossary Of Terms

Access control

GSM

GSM stands for global system for mobile communications. You can use GSM technology for access control, panic alarms and other security equipment.

Photocells

Photocells measure or detect light, and in your access control system, they measure whether an infrared beam between two gate pillars, for example, is unbroken.

CCTV

CCTV

Closed Circuit Television, or CCTV, monitors and records activity via a CCTV camera and recording device.

IP CCTV

IP (Internet Protocol) is the most prevalent transmission and switching technique being used today for CCTV systems.

Power-over-Ethernet (PoE)

Power-over-Ethernet (PoE) or "Active Ethernet" eliminates the need to run power to devices on a wired LAN. Using Power-over-Ethernet, installers need to run only a single CAT5 ethernet cable that carries both power and data to each device. This allows greater flexibility and in many cases significantly decreases installation costs.

Fire alarms

RMFA

An RMFA is a remote monitored fire alarm. If you want automatic attendance from the fire brigade, you must now register your RMFA with the Fire & Rescue Service and receive a Unique Reference Number (URN).

Intruder alarms

DD243

You may have heard of intruder alarms being DD243-compliant. If you require Police response for your intruder alarm, the Police require all intruder alarm systems to be DD243 compliant. If you need to regain Police response, or want to ensure your new system is DD243-compliant, contact us for more information.
